Apple has acknowledged an issue with the inner display of its new foldable iPhone Duo, after reports emerged of screens cracking along the hinge shortly after purchase. The company says the problem affects a small number of units and is offering replacements through AppleCare.
Users report hearing a crunch when unfolding the phone, followed by bright white lines or cracks appearing on the inner screen, often within hours or days of use. The damage appears consistent across reports, with lines running from the center hinge to the right side. Some owners say they felt a bump under the screen near the crack.
While the exact cause is unknown, iFixit's teardown suggests the hinge mechanism may be to blame. Their theory is that a support bar does not retract properly, causing the flexible display to press against it. iFixit CEO Kyle Wiens noted that a "manufacturing variance or grain of sand can kill the fragile display panel." Another theory points to an accordion cable passing over a pressure hotspot near the battery.
Customer service responses have been inconsistent. While some users report getting replacements "on the spot" at Apple Stores, others have been told they must have damaged the device themselves. One Apple Genius reportedly told a customer that "it's a new device and it's fragile and these things should be expected." Apple's official stance is to contact AppleCare for a replacement.
