Less than a month into his tenure, Apple CEO John Ternus is reportedly planning a major overhaul of the company, aiming to accelerate product launches and reduce management layers to stay competitive in the AI era.
Ternus wants Apple to move away from its traditional spring and fall product release cycles, introducing products more frequently throughout the year. He has also signaled internally that Apple must become "more experimental" in the AI era.
In the past two weeks, Apple's hardware engineering division has cut a number of engineering program managers, including roughly half a dozen directors. Affected employees have weeks to find other roles inside Apple or face layoffs later this year. These cuts follow earlier reductions on teams working on Siri, the Vision Pro, and AI software.
Ternus, along with services chief Eddy Cue and CFO Kevan Parekh, is looking for new revenue sources. Services revenue fell in the June quarter for the first time since 2022. Upcoming products include camera-equipped AirPods, Apple's first smart glasses, and a special 20th-anniversary iPhone.
