Gabby Williams scored 26 points to lead the Golden State Valkyries to a 68-64 victory over the Atlanta Dream in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals. The win gives Golden State an early advantage in the best-of-seven series, held at the Chase Center in San Francisco.
The Valkyries relied on their league-best defense to stifle Atlanta’s offense in the final minutes. After trailing 56-51 entering the fourth quarter, Golden State held the Dream to just two successful field goals out of twenty attempts in the closing stretch. Williams secured the win by hitting two free throws with 4.1 seconds remaining, capping a performance where she scored 16 of her 26 points in the second quarter alone .
While Williams led the scoring, other Valkyries struggled offensively; no player besides her reached double figures in points, and the team shot just 32.1% from the field overall. However, defensive contributions were crucial: Kaila Charles added seven points and ten rebounds, while Kiah Stokes recorded nine points, seven steals, and four blocks . For Atlanta, Allisha Gray led with 19 points despite poor shooting (5-of-19), and Angel Reese posted a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds .
This result ends Atlanta’s 10-game playoff winning streak and marks their first loss in the postseason. It is also the Dream’s third consecutive Finals defeat, having lost previous appearances in 2010, 2011, and 2013. Conversely, this is only the second season for the expansion Valkyries, who advanced by eliminating the Dallas Wings and defending champions Las Vegas Aces . The series shifts to Game 2 on Monday night, where both teams will look to adjust after a physically intense opening contest that saw Atlanta’s Tiffany Hayes leave with an injury late in the game .
