Netflix has confirmed that the sequel to the animated hit K-Pop Demon Hunters (titled Las guerreras Kpop 2 in Spanish) will debut in theaters worldwide before arriving on the streaming platform. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos announced the strategy shift at the Bloomberg Screentime conference, stating, "When the sequel to K-Pop Demon Hunters arrives, you can expect a very wide theatrical release" . This marks a significant departure from Netflix's traditional direct-to-streaming model for its original films.
The decision is driven by the unprecedented performance of the first film, released on June 20, 2025. It amassed 325.1 million views in its first 90 days and has since surpassed 500 million global streams . The film also spent 63 consecutive weeks in Netflix's global Top 10 and won two Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song .
A key factor was the success of a sing-along version released in theaters. It grossed $24.3 million in the U.S. over five days and briefly topped the box office in August 2025 . Sarandos noted this showed that passionate audiences want the big-screen experience, saying, "The most passionate audience went to see it in the cinema, so by the time it arrives on Netflix you've already lost that passionate audience" .
K-Pop Demon Hunters 2 is in early production, with directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans returning. A 2029 release is possible, but Sony Pictures Animation president Kristine Belson has cautioned this may be optimistic . Kang has expressed interest in incorporating heavy metal and Korean trot music into the sequel's soundtrack . Netflix also plans theatrical releases for other titles, including Narnia: The Magician's Nephew and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory .
