French President Emmanuel Macron has called on citizens to resist "the insidious spirit of defeatism" with eight months to go before the 2027 presidential election, in which he cannot stand again and where far-right leader Marine Le Pen is the favourite . Speaking at a ceremony marking the 82nd anniversary of a resistance uprising against Nazi soldiers in Bormes les Mimosas and Lavandou, Macron said: "France is magnificent, our youth too. There are many things done in our country every day that we should be proud of" . He urged people to "not lower their heads" and to be "intractable" against those who want to "destroy" what France represents . Without directly referencing the April–May 2027 elections, Macron encouraged confidence in "Europe", calling it "the source of our independence" in a fragmented world where international law is often violated .
The remarks coincide with Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin's endorsement of former centrist Prime Minister Édouard Philippe (2017–2020) for the presidency, a move that weakens declared candidate Gabriel Attal, Macron's 2024 prime minister and leader of the president's Renaissance party .
With numerous candidates spanning from progressivism to the classical right, some polls project a second round on 2 May 2027 between Le Pen and leftist Jean-Luc Mélenchon, with Le Pen ahead . Both are controversial figures with eurosceptic projects .
