India is evacuating tens of thousands of people from its eastern coast as Cyclone Arnab, a 'very severe' cyclonic storm, approaches landfall. The storm is expected to cross the coast near Visakhapatnam by Wednesday morning, with sustained winds of 115-125 km/h and gusts up to 140 km/h.
Nearly 50,000 people had been moved to shelters in Andhra Pradesh by Monday night, out of an estimated 400,000 in need of evacuation. In Odisha, authorities plan to evacuate 48,000 people. More than 12 million people live along the cyclone's projected path.
Railway authorities have cancelled at least 12 trains in eastern India and suspended services on 53 routes along the southern coast for Tuesday and Wednesday.
Authorities in neighbouring Nepal have advised tourists to stay away from high-altitude areas from Thursday night to Saturday, citing risks of heavy rain, snowstorms, and avalanches triggered by Arnab. This advisory follows a Himalayan flash flood in August that killed about 1,500 people.
