Former Dominican League closer Jairo Asencio has been discharged from the hospital and is recovering at home following an ischemic stroke suffered last Friday. The 43-year-old, recognized as the all-time leader in saves for the Liga de Béisbol Profesional de la República Dominicana (Lidom), was initially treated at the Juan Pablo Pina Hospital in San Cristóbal before being released on Sunday due to favorable medical evolution.
Asencio is currently resting in his residence in Palenque with his family. While Club Atlético Licey described his condition as stable and noted he is under medical supervision, Fenapepro President Erick Almonte provided specific details regarding his physical state. Almonte confirmed that some parts of Asencio’s left side were affected by the incident but emphasized that the pitcher is not in absolute bed rest and is recovering satisfactorily under the watch of doctors.
The baseball community mobilized quickly to support the athlete. Licey assumed all medical costs and sent representatives to visit Asencio at his home. Additionally, Fenapepro coordinated with Dr. Edward Guzmán, director of the National Health Insurance (Senasa), to facilitate immediate care. Former player Jordany Valdespín first broke the news via social media after receiving a call from a colleague.
Asencio leaves behind an unparalleled statistical record in Dominican baseball:
Fans and institutions have united in prayers for his continued recovery.
