The Fiscalía General de la Nación has opened a criminal investigation into death threats targeting Hernán Penagos, Colombia’s National Registrar. The allegations stem from information provided by a detainee who claims to know details of a plan orchestrated from within a prison center to assassinate the official. This development follows months of escalating tensions surrounding the recent presidential elections and Penagos’ role in certifying the results.
Minister of Justice Iván Cancino confirmed that the threat originated from inside a penitentiary facility. A prisoner disclosed specific details about the plot, prompting immediate action from the government. Cancino relayed this intelligence to President Abelardo De la Espriella and the Vice Fiscal General Gilberto Guerrero. The Fiscalía has since initiated a formal criminal inquiry to identify those responsible and dismantle the alleged conspiracy .
The threats emerge against a backdrop of significant controversy regarding the electoral process. During the campaign, former President Gustavo Petro raised unsubstantiated claims of irregularities and alleged voter impersonation. In response, the Registraduría digitized over 360,000 scrutiny acts for public verification, which international observers praised as transparent . Despite this, digital platforms have circulated intimidatory messages against Penagos and his staff since August, leading the Defensoría del Pueblo to previously condemn such actions .
High-ranking officials have united in their condemnation of the threats. Vice President José Manuel Restrepo issued a total rejection of the intimidation, praising Penagos for performing his duties with "responsibility, dedication, and rigor." He emphasized that the country must reject such attacks on public servants unequivocally . Similarly, Procurator General Gregorio Eljach demanded an immediate reinforcement of Penagos’ security scheme and swift identification of the perpetrators . Penagos, currently returning from an electoral observation mission in Brazil, is expected to receive enhanced protection measures in the coming days.
