Holland Taylor revealed that she never received a salary increase during her six-year contract on Two and a Half Men, despite earning four Emmy nominations for her role as Evelyn Harper. The actress, who played the matriarch of the Harper family alongside Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer, made these disclosures in an interview with the podcast Alchemy with Anthony Mason. Taylor noted that her compensation remained stagnant at levels comparable to those she earned eight years prior, stating, "I never got paid very well on that show." She emphasized that industry recognition did not translate into financial improvement: "I got four Emmy nominations and they never gave me a raise. Usually, they do."
When her initial contract concluded after six seasons, Taylor chose not to renew it as a series regular, opting instead for occasional guest appearances. This decision reportedly surprised the production team, who initially interpreted it as a negotiation tactic for higher pay. Taylor clarified that her primary goal was professional freedom rather than increased income. She recounted telling producers, "You could pay me what this building costs, but don't bother, because I don't want to be under contract anymore." The production responded that they could not afford to pay her more.
Reports highlight a significant disparity between Taylor’s earnings and those of her co-stars. While Taylor’s per-episode salary is estimated at approximately $75,000, Charlie Sheen reportedly earned up to $1.8 million per episode at the show's peak. Jon Cryer’s salary also saw substantial growth, quadrupling toward the end of the series. Taylor described the production staff as "not very polite" or "kind," contrasting their demeanor with the success of the sitcom. Although she left the main cast, she continued to appear in cameos through the series' conclusion in 2015, maintaining control over her schedule by accepting roles only when she wished.
