The Wall Street Journal reports that Trump administration officials are advocating for former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to become the next UN Secretary-General, potentially as a joint candidate of the US, Russia, and China.
According to the WSJ, sources in all three countries confirm the Trump administration is backing Orbán's bid, with the aim of making him a joint candidate. A US State Department official admitted the idea "sounds crazy at first" but noted that previous talks suggest Russia and China also support it. The White House, Moscow, and Beijing have not confirmed the information.
Orbán lost power in Hungary's April parliamentary election after 16 years in office. He has maintained close ties with Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, and Xi Jinping, while his hard-right, anti-migration policies strained relations with Western allies. Since the election, Hungarian authorities have launched fraud and corruption investigations into several members of Orbán's former government.
