Twelve people were injured in a shooting near the Bragg Memorial Stadium at Florida A&M University (FAMU) in Tallahassee on Saturday night, prompting the arrest of a 15-year-old suspect. The incident occurred during the university’s homecoming weekend celebrations, shortly after an American football game between FAMU and Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
Authorities confirmed that 11 victims sustained gunshot wounds, while a 12th person, identified as the grandmother of one victim, was injured while fleeing the scene. Among the injured are six minors, including an 11-year-old boy. Medical conditions vary: one minor is in critical condition, three others are serious, and eight are stable. No deaths have been reported.
Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell stated that preliminary investigations suggest the shooting stemmed from an altercation between two or three individuals. While early reports indicated no arrests, CNN later confirmed that a 15-year-old male was detained and faces 11 counts of attempted intentional homicide without premeditation, plus firearm possession charges. Police noted it does not appear any victim was a specific target.
The event drew heavy crowds for homecoming festivities. Police described officers running into the dense crowd to assist victims without knowing the shooter's location. FAMU issued a statement expressing condolences and urging the community to avoid Perry Street to facilitate the investigation. Mayor John Dailey condemned the violence as a "truly horrible and heartbreaking tragedy." As of Monday morning, five victims had been discharged, with six still hospitalized.
