U.S. First Lady Melania Trump has brokered a localized ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky, the White House announced on Friday. The truce, set to begin on October 27, aims to allow humanitarian aid deliveries and the evacuation of civilians from the embattled city, which has been under Russian occupation since February 2022 and faces a severe humanitarian crisis.
Under the agreement, both sides will halt military operations in Oleshky to enable the delivery of food, medicine, and clean water, and to facilitate the safe passage of residents who wish to leave. Melania Trump stated that she worked as the "exclusive intermediary" with Russian and Ukrainian leadership. Ukrainian ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets confirmed the deal, saying it includes a ceasefire, humanitarian aid delivery, and free civilian movement. Russian Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov said Russian forces would cease fire from 4 a.m. Moscow time on October 27.
Sources disagree on the ceasefire's start date. The White House initially said it would begin on October 29, while Russia and Ukraine later confirmed an earlier start on October 27. Additionally, while the White House credited Melania Trump as the sole broker, Ukrainian official Davyd Arakhamia highlighted the roles of both the First Lady and Pope Leo XIV, who reportedly discussed the crisis with Putin. The Kremlin expressed gratitude to Trump and noted the topic was discussed in a call between Presidents Putin and Trump.
The localized ceasefire comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Kyiv, with Ukraine facing restrictions on its Starshield satellite system and recent U.S. concessions to Russia, including diesel imports. Negotiators from the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine are expected to meet in Abu Dhabi in November for broader peace talks.
