Meghan Markle has stated that she knew of disturbing allegations against her father, Thomas Markle Sr., in 2018, using this knowledge to explain her long-standing decision to cut contact with him and prevent him from seeing her children. The Duchess of Sussex issued a statement expressing deep anguish over recent reports that her father is under investigation for possessing child sexual abuse material.
The controversy began after Thomas Markle Jr., Meghan’s half-brother, told The Sun that he discovered hundreds or thousands of images and videos involving minors while clearing out his father’s former home in Cebu, Philippines. Markle Jr. stated he was horrified and immediately reported the findings to Philippine police and the FBI. In response, authorities in the Philippines confirmed they are investigating the claims, and the FBI indicated it would support the inquiry if U.S. federal laws were violated . However, Thomas Markle Sr. has categorically denied the accusations, calling them "repulsive lies" and stating he is shocked by his son’s actions .
In her public response, Meghan revealed that in 2018, she received a letter sent to London’s Metropolitan Police containing "worrying and disturbing" allegations against her father. She noted that she was assured at the time that an investigation was underway. "I hope it can now be understood that... my distance from my father and my decision not to allow him contact with our children had one reason: to protect them," she wrote .
The incident has further fractured the Markle family. Samantha Markle, another daughter of Thomas Sr., defended their father, accusing Thomas Jr. of fabricating the story for financial gain . Meanwhile, Scotland Yard confirmed it is checking its records regarding the 2018 letter but did not confirm active investigations into Thomas Sr. at that time . As of now, no formal charges have been filed, and the authenticity of the materials remains unverified by independent forensic analysis .
