Independent Australian MP Helen Haines has lost both legs following a deliberate vehicle attack in Wangaratta, Victoria. The 65-year-old politician was struck twice by a Toyota Land Cruiser driven by 43-year-old Brendan Nugent on Monday afternoon. While initially reported as critical with one leg amputated, her husband Phil confirmed on Wednesday that surgeons also had to amputate her right leg. Despite the severity of the injuries, Haines remains stable, with her husband noting that "both her heart and mind are in good condition" .
Nugent appeared in court facing charges including dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm and intentionally causing serious injury. His defense revealed he suffers from idiopathic transverse myelitis, a rare neurological condition, though no link to the attack was established. Police have not ruled out murder charges, describing the incident as a "deliberate attack" rather than an accident .
The motive remains under investigation by a joint task force involving ASIO and federal police. While Nugent was previously linked to anti-logging activism, authorities state there is no evidence of prior contact with Haines, who has championed environmental causes. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the act, highlighting a broader rise in threats against politicians, which increased from 951 in 2024 to over 1,000 in 2025 .
