The Mexican federal government has charged former Chihuahua prosecutor César Jáuregui with treason to the fatherland following an unauthorized operation involving CIA agents that resulted in two deaths. The case has ignited a fierce political battle between the ruling Morena party and the opposition PAN, which governs Chihuahua.
A federal judge declared the initial hearing partially private, citing national security risks and potential diplomatic conflicts with the United States. While the prosecution argued that disclosing evidence could harm international relations, Jáuregui’s defense demanded maximum publicity. The judge granted a 12-hour recess for the defense to review a massive dossier comprising four volumes and extensive video footage before formal charges are presented .
President Claudia Sheinbaum firmly rejected rumors of a political pact with Chihuahua Governor María Eugenia Campos (“Maru”) to facilitate Jáuregui’s arrest, stating, “We do not make political pacts with justice” . Conversely, Morena President Ariadna Montiel accused Campos of being a “complicit” accomplice to Jáuregui, predicting a Morena victory in Chihuahua’s 2027 elections .
Jáuregui denies authorizing the CIA’s involvement, asserting there is no direct evidence linking him to the decision . However, Federal Prosecutor Ernestina Godoy claims Jáuregui allowed foreign agents to intervene in federal jurisdiction matters without authorization . Meanwhile, PAN leader Jorge Romero criticized the treason charge as politically motivated, while Morena’s Citlalli Hernández defended it as a necessary protection of sovereignty .
