The first cold front of the 2026-2027 season has entered Mexico, bringing intense rainfall, possible hail, and a sharp drop in temperatures to several northern and central states from October 1 to 4. The front is reinforced by a cold air mass and interacts with other weather systems, including Tropical Storm Rachel and Tropical Wave 42, creating a complex and potentially hazardous weather scenario across much of the country.
The cold front will primarily impact the northeast, with intense rains forecast for Coahuila, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, Durango, Zacatecas, and San Luis Potosí on Thursday, October 1. Strong winds could lead to the formation of waterspouts in northern Coahuila. In Tamaulipas, authorities warn of accumulated rainfall between 150 and 250 millimeters, leading to a high risk of flooding and river overflows.
Minimum temperatures are expected to drop to between 0 and 5 degrees Celsius in the mountainous areas of Chihuahua, Durango, Estado de México, Tlaxcala, Hidalgo, and Puebla. In Tamaulipas, the temperature drop will be more moderate, with lows between 18 and 22 degrees Celsius.
Simultaneously, the circulation of Tropical Storm Rachel will cause very heavy rains and high waves in the western states of Baja California Sur, Sinaloa, Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, and Guerrero. Tropical Wave 42 will also contribute to rainfall in the Yucatán Peninsula.
