President Donald Trump announced on Monday the completion of a permanent granite helipad on the South Lawn of the White House, designed to accommodate the more powerful Marine One helicopter without damaging the grass. The landing zone features the Great Seal of the United States in black and white and is made of what Trump described as "practically indestructible" granite.
Traditionally, presidents have boarded Marine One on the South Lawn, but the newer fleet of helicopters has more powerful exhaust directed downward, which was damaging the turf. The new helipad solves this problem while providing a permanent, durable surface.
Trump, a former real estate developer, has undertaken several construction projects to leave his mark on Washington. These include a controversial ballroom that required demolishing the historic East Wing of the White House. He also ordered the repair and repainting of the reflecting pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial, a project that went over budget and, days after its inauguration, turned green again due to an algae bloom.
