President Donald Trump stated he is open to negotiating a peace deal with Iran, claiming Tehran wants an agreement "fast and at any cost." In posts on Truth Social, Trump wrote, "The decaying nation of Iran wants to reach an agreement, fast and at any cost. I will decide if the United States chooses to negotiate, a possibility we are open to" .
The U.S. has been at war with Iran for over six months, a conflict that has not achieved its stated goal of overthrowing the ayatollahs' regime. The war threatens to hurt Republicans in the November 3 legislative elections due to rising gasoline prices from the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Washington and Tehran have held numerous rounds of talks and even signed a memorandum of understanding in June, but ceasefires have broken down after cross-attacks in the Persian Gulf .
Trump also stated that oil is flowing through the Strait of Hormuz thanks to the U.S. and argued that other countries should "reimburse the United States" for this, as they "have not provided any help" during the war .
