The English refereeing body Pro Referees has admitted a "error de juicio" (error of judgment) in the VAR review that allowed Erling Haaland's goal to stand in Manchester City's 1-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford. The goal, scored in the 60th minute, was initially ruled out for offside against Haaland, but the VAR overturned the decision after determining the Norwegian was in a legal position. The controversy centers on the role of Enzo Fernández, who was in an offside position and attempted to play the ball before Haaland scored.
Pro Referees stated that while Fernández did not touch the ball, making any offside infringement "subjective," the VAR failed to recognize the "probable impact" of his position and should have recommended an on-field review. The body has contacted Manchester United to acknowledge the error and will conduct a review of the incident. As a result, VAR Matt Donohue and AVAR Blake Antrobus have been removed from upcoming match assignments.
Manchester United defender Lisandro Martínez called the decision "una injusticia" (an injustice) and said it is "inaceptable" (unacceptable) for such errors to occur in the Premier League. The result leaves Manchester City level on 12 points with league leaders Arsenal, while Manchester United remain in 13th place with four points. The match also saw City play with ten men for over an hour after Phil Foden's red card.
