President Donald Trump has dismissed warnings from AI researchers that advanced artificial intelligence could pose an existential threat to humanity, stating his primary concern is winning the AI race against China. Trump told reporters he has no concerns about AI causing human extinction, saying, “I have concerns that if we don’t win AI, we’re going to be put in a very bad position” .
In the days prior, several researchers from leading AI labs like Anthropic and OpenAI publicly resigned or voiced grave concerns. Jacob Coxon, a former Anthropic and OpenAI researcher, wrote that AI companies are “gambling with our lives” and that “the people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade” . Anthropic’s alignment research lead, Evan Hubinger, echoed this, stating he believes there is a greater than 10% chance AI could kill all humans within the next decade. OpenAI researcher Jasmine Wang also warned of the dangers of “speeding towards RSI” (recursive self-improvement) .
Trump’s stance aligns with that of Senator Ted Cruz, who told Politico, “If they’re going to be killer robots, I’d rather they be American killer robots and not Chinese killer robots” . While some lawmakers propose legislation to regulate AI development, Trump’s administration appears focused on maintaining a competitive edge over China, which he estimates the U.S. leads by about a year .
