A new study suggests TikTok is shaping adolescents' appetites and food choices, with teens reporting that food-related content sparks cravings and a desire to try new foods. The research, published August 19 in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior, involved four focus groups with 25 students aged 15–16 from a Midwestern U.S. high school . Lead author Adrianna Bell, who conducted the study at the University of Minnesota, said teens described TikTok as "a highly engaging environment where food content can quickly capture their attention and spark the desire to eat or try something new" .
Parents can counter TikTok's influence by offering family meals, shared activities, and critical conversations about content. Although teens generally felt parents weren't involved in their daily TikTok use, they acknowledged parents sometimes interrupted exposure and encouraged critical thinking . Bell noted that parents played "an important role in interrupting exposure to food-related content and fostering critical conversations" .
The study's authors caution that it doesn't yet prove TikTok directly changes eating habits, but the testimonies highlight its potential to shape desires and behaviors .
