UNAM tops Mexican universities in two global rankings

The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) remains the top-ranked Mexican university in two major international rankings, reinforcing its position as a leading academic institution in Latin America. In the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2026, UNAM is placed in the 201–300 range globally, the best among Mexican institutions and second in Latin America, behind the University of São Paulo Source: El Heraldo de México. The only other Mexican university in the ARWU top 1000 is the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN).

In the Webometrics ranking, published on July 22, 2026, UNAM holds 127th place worldwide, out of nearly 32,000 institutions from over 200 countries. The two rankings use distinct criteria. ARWU, produced by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, focuses on research performance, including Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers, and articles in international scientific databases.
