NASA's attempt to rescue the aging Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory has failed, and the telescope is now expected to re-enter Earth's atmosphere later this year. The agency announced on August 19 that the LINK spacecraft, built by Katalyst Space Technologies, would not capture or boost Swift to a higher orbit due to persistent attitude control issues . The mission, valued at $30 million, was launched on July 3, 2026, but LINK began tumbling out of control on July 28, losing communications for 72 hours . Although Katalyst regained control, the delay and ongoing problems led to the decision to cancel the rescue .
LINK was designed to rendezvous with Swift, use robotic arms to capture it, and raise it to a higher orbit, extending its science mission . However, two of its three reaction wheels failed, and there were issues with its cold gas propulsion system . NASA and Katalyst determined that the capture attempt was no longer feasible .
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman acknowledged the disappointment but defended the effort: "This is not the outcome we were working toward, but it doesn't change why this mission was worth the effort" . Katalyst CEO Ghonhee Lee emphasized the lessons learned, saying, "We've already learned a tremendous amount, and now our job is to turn those lessons into something lasting" .
LINK will still attempt to rendezvous with Swift as a demonstration, not a rescue, to gather data for future satellite servicing missions . Swift, launched in 2004 to study gamma-ray bursts, will likely disintegrate upon re-entry, expected between September and October 2026, depending on atmospheric conditions and solar activity .
