A Belgian study has found that frequent nighttime micro-awakenings are associated with a higher genetic predisposition to Alzheimer's disease in healthy middle-aged adults. The research, conducted by the University of Liège and published in the journal Sleep, analyzed the sleep patterns of 540 healthy participants, including 453 young adults (average age 22) and 87 middle-aged adults (around 59 years old) . The findings suggest that certain types of brief brain activations during sleep, rather than just the number of awakenings, may serve as an early indicator of vulnerability to Alzheimer's .
Experts caution that the results do not prove that waking up frequently causes Alzheimer's, nor can they be used as a diagnostic tool . However, the findings open a new avenue for studying sleep as a potential early marker of Alzheimer's vulnerability, potentially helping to identify at-risk individuals before memory problems appear .
