A study by Florida International University (FIU) researchers tested 119 human volunteers against three of the world's most dangerous mosquito species and found that no single person was attractive to all three species. Each mosquito species showed distinct preferences based on individual body chemistry, according to findings published in iScience . The research could lead to species-specific repellents and new strategies against mosquito-borne diseases .
Lead researcher Matthew DeGennaro noted that isolating human odor components that attract or repel mosquitoes could lead to new vector-borne disease strategies . The study, led by doctoral student Kaylee Marrero, is the first to directly compare how multiple mosquito species respond to the same people . Marrero expressed surprise that each species had a distinct microbial fingerprint used as a signal . Human odor comprises over 1,000 volatile organic compounds, many uncharacterized, and each species evolved different ways to perceive humans .
