A new study from Rockefeller University, published in Cell Reports Medicine, finds that just three minutes of intense exercise—six 30-second cycling sprints—alters nearly a quarter of measured blood proteins immediately after the effort, far more than 90 minutes of moderate cycling, which changed less than 0.25% . The sprints also modified over 200 metabolites and boosted proteins linked to blood vessel growth, tissue remodeling, and hormonal signaling .
Researchers attribute the rapid release of these proteins to a process called ectodomain shedding, where protein fragments already on cell surfaces are cleaved and released into circulation without new synthesis . Human fat cells exposed to blood taken after sprints showed extensive changes in gene activity related to energy processing, hormone response, and nutrient sensing, whereas moderate exercise produced only minor changes .
Cross-referencing exercise-responsive proteins with health data from over 53,000 UK Biobank participants, the study found that many of these proteins are associated with lower risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Notably, of 33 proteins linked to reduced risk, 32 were altered by sprinting versus only three by moderate exercise . More than a quarter of these proteins were also associated with slower biological aging .
Lead researcher Luke Olsen noted that the molecular response persists even after eight weeks of training, suggesting it is intrinsic to intense exercise rather than a stress adaptation . The findings suggest that brief, high-intensity efforts may offer disproportionate health benefits, though the study does not diminish the value of moderate exercise for overall fitness.
