Lluís Bonet i Armengol, rector of Barcelona's Sagrada Família from 1993 to 2018, died on Friday at the age of 95 . Born in 1931, Bonet was a key ecclesiastical figure linked to the temple and a promoter of the beatification cause of architect Antoni Gaudí .
Bonet was the son of architect Lluís Bonet i Garí, a disciple of Gaudí who continued the temple's construction after the Spanish Civil War . This familial connection deepened his personal and spiritual bond with Gaudí's legacy .
In 2000, Bonet promoted the opening of the diocesan process for Gaudí's beatification, actively collecting testimonies and documentation about the architect's life and virtues . In November 2010, he witnessed the consecration of the basilica by Pope Benedict XVI .
Beyond the Sagrada Família, Bonet served for 14 years as parish priest of Sant Cristòfor in Terrassa, where he supported workers' housing rights and cared for the vulnerable . He also held roles as episcopal vicar and helped organize the Pastoral Zone of Terrassa .
Bonet donated his body to science, and no funeral will be held; a diocesan and parish celebration is planned for September . He retired canonically in 2018 and was succeeded by Josep Maria Turull .
