Morena's national leader, Ariadna Montiel, announced that federal deputies seeking reelection in 2027 will not be required to request a leave of absence from their seats, a decision expected to be formalized in the party's upcoming call for district coordination. This move responds to concerns raised by Ricardo Monreal, coordinator of Morena's bench in the Chamber of Deputies, who warned that requiring leave would complicate the formation of the legislative group, especially as 41 of 253 Morena deputies have already requested leave at various times.
Monreal argued that many deputies lack substitutes, and their departure would hinder legislative work, particularly with a busy agenda of about twenty reforms starting September 1. Montiel echoed this, noting that deputies are needed for legislative tasks and that the party has advised members to wait for the official convocation before making decisions.
Montiel clarified that while electoral law does not oblige deputies to request leave for campaigning, it recommends it for those engaging in activism. However, for the internal selection process, the party's own rules will apply. She emphasized that the internal process for selecting coordinators is separate from official candidacies, which will adhere to electoral law in 2027. The party has postponed registration for district coordination until late August, with different requirements than those for gubernatorial candidates.
