President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella announced the appointment of Ana María Vesga as Minister of Health, tasking her with leading a plan to address the sector's deep crisis. Vesga, currently president of Acemi (the association of major health insurers), will take office on August 7, 2026.
The announcement came via social media, with De la Espriella stating that 'the health of Colombians cannot wait any longer' and that Vesga will 'recover a system that must put people at the center of every decision.'
Vesga is a lawyer from Universidad de los Andes with a master's in Health Economics from Pompeu Fabra. She previously led Acemi, a key player in the failed health reform debate under outgoing President Gustavo Petro. Her critics note her close ties to private insurers, while supporters highlight her technical profile and ability to build consensus.
The average tenure for health ministers is 31.5 months; Vesga replaces Guillermo Jaramillo, who served 40 months.
