Two stages of Puerto Peñasco solar plant now fully operational

The first two stages of the Planta Fotovoltaica de Puerto Peñasco are now operating at 100% capacity, marking a significant step in Sonora's energy strategy. The project, the largest of its kind in Latin America, involves a total investment of $1.64 billion USD across four phases.

How it works

The plant sells electricity to the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE), and the revenue funds a summer electricity subsidy for all 72 municipalities in Sonora. For 2025, 1,750 million pesos have been allocated to this subsidy, providing financial relief for residents.

Project milestones

• Phase 1 (120 MW) went online in 2024, and Phase 2 (300 MW) in 2025 Source: Excelsior.
• Phases 3 (300 MW) and 4 (280 MW) are under construction, with completion expected by 2027, bringing total capacity to 1 GW Source: Milenio.

Broader goals

The plant supports Mexico’s target of generating 38% of electricity from clean sources by 2030 Source: Milenio. Governor Alfonso Durazo highlighted that this model creates a stable funding source for subsidies while advancing renewable energy.
