The Mexican Chamber of Deputies will begin its next ordinary session on September 1 with five priority legislative topics, including artificial intelligence regulation and a new feminicide law proposed by President Claudia Sheinbaum. The agenda was announced by Ricardo Monreal, coordinator of the Morena party and president of the Junta de Coordinación Política.
The five priorities
Artificial Intelligence: Monreal stressed the need to avoid prohibition and overregulation, instead studying international frameworks from the EU, China, and the US to create flexible models.
Feminicide: President Sheinbaum’s initiative, sent to Congress on July 15, aims to standardize the definition and penalties nationwide, with a base prison term of 50 to 70 years and 19 aggravating factors. It also eliminates parole, amnesty, and prescription for the crime.
Indigenous Peoples: A regulatory law for indigenous peoples will undergo consultation.
Animal Welfare: Legislation on animal welfare is also on the list.
Medical Expense Insurance: The reform targets abuses by insurance companies and excessive costs in private hospitals.
Monreal stated that while these topics are part of Morena’s agenda, other parliamentary groups share them and he expects broad consensus starting September 1.
