A team of astronomers has directly observed four white dwarfs in binary systems within 65 light-years of Earth, using ultraviolet data from the Hubble Space Telescope. The findings, published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, reveal these stellar remnants were hidden by the glare of their red dwarf companions.
The four systems were identified by a research team from the University of Warwick and the University of Colorado Boulder. The white dwarfs were detected in ultraviolet wavelengths, where they stand out despite the brightness of the red dwarfs.
