Luis Goytisolo, author of 'Antagonía', dies at 91

Luis Goytisolo, one of Spain's most innovative novelists and the last surviving member of the celebrated Goytisolo literary family, died on 12 July 2026 in Vimbodí, Tarragona, at the age of 91. Literary career

Born in Barcelona on 17 March 1935, Goytisolo launched his career with Las afueras (1958), which won the first Biblioteca Breve prize Source: La Vanguardia. His magnum opus, the tetralogy Antagonía (1973–1981), is considered a landmark of 20th-century Spanish literature for its experimental structure and deep reflection on the creative process Source: El Español. Awards and recognition

Goytisolo received numerous honours, including the Premio Nacional de las Letras Españolas (2013) and the Premio Internacional Carlos Fuentes (2018).
