Luis Goytisolo, one of Spain's most innovative novelists and the last surviving member of the celebrated Goytisolo literary family, died on 12 July 2026 in Vimbodí, Tarragona, at the age of 91. Born in Barcelona on 17 March 1935, Goytisolo launched his career with Las afueras (1958), which won the first Biblioteca Breve prize Source: La Vanguardia. His magnum opus, the tetralogy Antagonía (1973–1981), is considered a landmark of 20th-century Spanish literature for its experimental structure and deep reflection on the creative process Source: El Español. He also wrote essays, journalism, and documentaries for TVE, including the series Índico and Mediterráneo Source: El Mundo.
Goytisolo received numerous honours, including the Premio Nacional de las Letras Españolas (2013) and the Premio Internacional Carlos Fuentes (2018). The shared loss of their mother in a 1938 bombing left a deep imprint on their work.
