A new genetic study has determined that the expansion of human settlements and the rise of cities are directly responsible for the proliferation of bed bugs (Cimex lectularius), making humans the culprits behind the persistence of this pest. The research, published in Biology Letters, analyzed the DNA of bed bugs and traced their population growth to the advent of agriculture and urban living around 12,000 years ago.
Scientists from Virginia Tech compared the genomes of two bed bug lineages: one associated with bats and one adapted to humans.
