The case has taken a dramatic turn with the detention of two men linked to Ukrainian intelligence agencies, one of whom confessed to the murder before retracting.
What happened
Anastasiia Berezovska, 39, was named by Interpol as the prime suspect after CCTV showed her planting a bomb in a Monaco apartment building. She fled through France and Germany, arriving in Ukraine on July 1. Her body was discovered with gunshot wounds to the head in woods west of Kyiv. Source: BBC
The suspects
Ukrainian police detained Vladyslav Reut, an active officer in Ukraine's military intelligence agency (GUR), and Vitaliy Zhykovych, a former law enforcement officer. Initially, Reut confessed to killing Berezovska and led investigators to her grave. However, in court on July 10, he retracted, claiming Zhykovych fired the fatal shots.
