Delcy Rodríguez says rescue is priority after deadly Venezuela quakes

Venezuela faces a humanitarian crisis after a double earthquake struck on Wednesday, leaving at least 920 dead and 3,360 injured, according to official figures. Acting President Delcy Rodríguez stated that the immediate priority is rescuing people still trapped under debris, as the country enters its fourth day of emergency response.

Rescue efforts

International rescue teams from nine countries are already assisting, with ten more expected to arrive soon. Rodríguez confirmed that 14,000 military and police personnel have been deployed to secure the worst-hit state of La Guaria, which has been fully militarized to ensure safety for rescue operations. The state has restored 60% of its electricity supply, and work is underway to restore water services.

International aid

Italy has sent aid, and Rodríguez spoke with Italian President Giorgia Meloni, who expressed shock at the devastation. Health measures are being implemented to prevent outbreaks due to unretrieved bodies.
