The Spanish Congress approved a motion on Thursday demanding President Pedro Sánchez resign or face a confidence vote, a move backed by an absolute majority. Opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo accused Sánchez of 'caudillismo' not seen in 50 years, claiming he is governing against the will of parliament.
In a speech at the PP Catalonia congress, Feijóo said: 'Lleva dos días gobernando en contra del Congreso. Eso no es democrático y es propio de un caudillismo que no se veía desde hace 50 años' . He argued that Sánchez ignored the parliamentary majority that called for his resignation, comparing his attitude to authoritarian rule. Feijóo also criticized left-wing parties for tolerating corruption and applauding the government's defiance .
Feijóo described the government as 'una desgracia' because it has become corrupt and undermined basic standards of exemplariness . He accused the executive of acting against counter-powers such as judges, police, and journalists . The PP leader insisted that Spain needs a decent government urgently and that his party offers the only viable alternative.
Feijóo spoke as Alejandro Fernández was reelected president of the PP in Catalonia with 97.51% of votes . Feijóo stressed that Catalonia is key to national change and called for policies on housing, healthcare, and immigration . He warned that the next general election will decide the country's democracy and institutions .
