Daisy Edgar-Jones stars as Elinor Dashwood in a new film adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, directed by Georgia Oakley. The first trailer, released by Focus Features, offers a glimpse of the period drama, set for release on October 23. The story follows the Dashwood sisters—Elinor, Marianne, and Margaret—who, after their father's death, face financial hardship and must navigate love and societal expectations.
Edgar-Jones leads a ensemble cast that includes Esmé Creed-Miles as Marianne Dashwood, Caitríona Balfe as Mrs. Dashwood, George MacKay as Edward Ferrars, Frank Dillane as John Willoughby, and Herbert Nordrum as Colonel Brandon. The script is by Diana Reid, with production by Working Title Films. Oakley, known for her BAFTA-nominated debut Blue Jean, directs.
The new version inevitably invites comparison to the acclaimed 1995 adaptation directed by Ang Lee, which won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay and starred Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet. Early reactions to the trailer note its faithful tone and visual splendor, echoing the classic Regency aesthetic while aiming to bring a fresh perspective.
