US Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins will visit Chiapas on Saturday to inaugurate a sterile fly plant, a project jointly funded by Mexico and the United States to combat the cattle screwworm pest. Rollins will travel to Chiapas alongside Ambassador Ronald Johnson to open the plant, which aims to control the screwworm that threatens livestock in both countries. Sheinbaum stated, 'This is proof of the great collaboration there is.'
While the visit underscores cooperation, Sheinbaum acknowledged existing tensions. She reiterated Mexico's disagreement with US tariffs and raised concerns about deaths of Mexican nationals in ICE detention centers, noting that diplomatic notes have been sent and consuls deployed to monitor conditions. 'We do not agree on tariffs, but that does not mean talks are interrupted,' she said.
Sheinbaum used a birthday greeting from Ambassador Johnson on X as evidence of a positive relationship, contradicting narratives of a bilateral crisis.
