64% of economists predict a deterioration of the Spanish economy in the next six months, according to the 2026 Economic Barometer. This backdrop has spurred top business figures to call for an early general election, arguing that political instability and corruption are damaging the country's reputation and economic prospects.
Miguel Garrido, president of the Madrid employers' association CEIM and vice-president of the national CEOE, formally demanded an "urgent" election after the Supreme Court convicted former minister José Luis Ábalos and Koldo García in the "Mascarillas" corruption case. "This is an exhausted government and it is necessary to call general elections to start a new phase," Garrido said. While CEIM has adopted an official position in favor of early elections, the national CEOE has not yet done so. Its president, Antonio Garamendi, has been critical of the government but stopped short of calling for an early vote. "In a company, if things are not going well, the manager would be out on the street," he said, referring to the lack of state budgets and high public debt.
