The Future Combat Air System (FCAS), Europe's ambitious program to develop a sixth-generation fighter jet, has collapsed due to irreconcilable differences between key partners France and Germany. The failure was confirmed by French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, marking the end of a project that was supposed to secure European defense autonomy Source: El Confidencial.

The rift

Tensions had been building for months. Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury hinted at problems in February 2026, suggesting the possibility of two separate platforms. In March, Dassault CEO Éric Trappier bluntly stated that if Airbus refused to work under Dassault's lead, "the program is dead" Source: El Confidencial. The core dispute revolved around control over the design of the New Generation Fighter (NGF), the manned component of the system.

What's at stake

Spain, a third partner in the 50-25-25 cost-sharing arrangement, now faces a strategic gap. The country had committed significant funds and industrial capacity. According to an EL MUNDO analysis, the failure leaves Spain without a future combat aircraft and raises questions about its role in European defense Source: EL MUNDO. The remaining pillars of the FCAS program, such as remote carriers and the combat cloud, may still move forward, but the flagship NGF is effectively dead.
